Sometimes it all comes down to sprawl; at others, it all comes down to the ordered chaos of crowded spaces. New York City has made a human and technological science of both: the seemingly endless numbers and diversity of its people operating in very defined, contained spaces. The fourth collaboration between vanguard jazz über drummer Steve Reid and Four Tet mastermind Kieran Hebden is entitled NYC for a reason. Over six tracks — all named for geographical locations within the city — and 42 minutes, this pair manages their most ambitious, rhythmically and texturally dense offering yet which maneuvers through a think, layered sonic soup that makes sense, even as it aurally reveals the poetry in motion of colors, dynamics, and how a lack of space can be expanded upon to reach into the world itself. Previous offerings by the duo tried to reflect the nature of improvisation and the stretched dynamics of texture, but that is not the case here — intentionally at least. Reid, a New York native who lives in Europe, has always been a proponent of circular rhythm. In his manner of drumming, no matter how expansive the harmonic palette, or how free the improvisation, the listener can always find her way back inside. This is underscored on NYC. Beginning with “Lyman Place,” Reid’s drums find a forceful, seemingly monotonous beat that’s heavy on low tuned tom- toms and ride cymbal. There are other elements as well, but they’re added for polyrhythmic structure. Hebden adorns the drums with all manner of feedback, blips, beeps, squeals, and ambiences to open up and extend the reach of the drums. The sharp yet funky electric guitar riff whose sample provides its own rhythmic pulse on “1st & 1st” is equal parts J.B.’s and Malian groove-think Lobi Traoré. It offers a window for Reid to allow the circular rhythms to wind themselves out. It’s all call-and-response with sound (oscillators, analog synths, industrial sounds) coming in from all directions and kicking the dimension of the tune — especially with some fine single-beat muted chord drone in the form of another guitar sample as a steadfast handle to glue it together. “25th Street” begins with a keyboard vamp, made up of a single chord for Reid to hang his drums on. It places the listener dead center of a seismic rhythmic orgy where hand drums get layered against the kit, and shimmering sonics hang on the fringes. This is dance music for the nuclear age, rooted in the primitive yet projecting into the sprawling unknown future. The final track begins with a sampled kora pulse. Its tones become overtones before Reid even enters and he dances all around them with a series of complex runs on his kit before opening up his attack from the inside and coming at the string sounds from underneath. His rolls become the assault, but they are transformed into a fingerpopping backdrop in this hymn of ambience. Sampled, repetitive clocks ticking in metronymic extremis add tension and sustenance. Keyboards slowly wind ar

The fact that something was founded as a side project doesn’t necessarily mean that the participants don’t take it as seriously as they take their other endeavors. Blackfield, for example, started out as a side project for singer/multi-instrumentalist Steven Wilson, who had been leading Porcupine Tree for a decade when he co-founded Blackfield with Israeli singer/songwriter Aviv Geffen in the early 2000s. But Blackfield developed an enthusiastic following of their own and demonstrated that they were a rewarding group in their own right. This live two-disc set, which contains both a DVD and a 79-minute audio CD, focuses on Blackfield’s May 16, 2007 appearance at the Bowery Ballroom in Downtown Manhattan. The DVD and the CD contain the same live performances, but the DVD also offers videos for the studio versions of the songs “Blackfield,” “Pain” (not to be confused with the Ohio Players’ early-’70s classic) and “Hello.” And on both discs, one is reminded how effectively Blackfield’s alternative pop/rock has been bringing together influences from different rock eras. One hears the influence of Pink Floyd and ’70s-era David Bowie during the show at the Bowery Ballroom (where Wilson and Geffen embrace mostly material from Blackfield’s first two studio albums), but they also draw plenty of inspiration from ’80s new wave and ’90s/2000s alternative (especially the Brit-pop of Radiohead and Coldplay). That is an attractive combination of ’70s, ‘80s, and ’90s influences, and it makes for many inspired moments at the Bowery Ballroom (where Blackfield also perform a memorable cover of Alanis Morissette’s “Thank You”). This DVD/CD is more appropriate for hardcore fans than casual listeners, who would be better off starting out with one of Blackfield’s first two studio albums. But those who are already seasoned Blackfield followers will find NYC: Live in New York City to be an engaging document of their Bowery Ballroom show., Rovi Performers: Aviv Geffen – Vocals, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Keyboards

It was late 1996; Joey Ramone was working on a solo album and guitarist Johnny Ramone had retired to suburban luxury. Longtime drummer Marky Ramone had his band the Intruders, but there was unease in the musical fantasyland that was the Ramones. It was in this vacuum that the Ramainz were formed. Originally calling themselves “the Remains,” because they were all that remained of the legendary punk rockers, Marky Ramone and original bassist Dee Dee Ramone put the band together as a live project to perform Ramones songs (many of which were written by Dee Dee in the first place). Sporadic live shows were performed in 1996-1997, mostly in and around New York City, with Dee Dee on guitar and vocals, C.J. Ramone on bass, and Marky on drums. Dee Dee’s wife, Barbara Zampini (aka Barbara Ramone), filled in on bass after C.J. departed; Ben Trokan of the Intruders was added later on guitar. After a couple of years of playing, they changed the band’s name to the Ramainz to avoid potential conflicts with Barry & the Remains.Originally released independently in 1999 by GB Music, Live in NYC captures a 1997 performance at the Continental Club in New York City with a lineup that includes Dee Dee, Marky, and Barbara. Recorded off the soundboard on a DAT recorder, the disc sounds like a (very) good-quality bootleg. Raw, unrefined, and unpolished with absolutely no overdubs or studio gimmickry, Live in NYC boils over with enthusiasm, and what the album lacks in sonic qualities it more than makes up for in attitude. The Ramainz reprise 19 classic Ramones songs on Live in NYC, including “Rockaway Beach,” “I Wanna Be Sedated,” and “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker,” with Dee Dee and Barbara sharing vocals. Two new songs are also performed, “Rock & Roll Vacation in LA” and “Hop Around,” both speedy punk rockers in the Ramones’ vein. Although Dee Dee’s strained vocals and Barbara’s understated readings could never replace Joey’s soulful voice, the Ramainz punch out these songs with true pinhead glee, buzzing guitars, and reckless energy, re-creating the timeless Ramones sound for die-hard fans.Although many contemporary bands capture the classic Ramones vibe better — Screeching Weasel and Boris the Sprinkler come to mind — the Ramainz had the credentials and a solid claim on the Ramones’ legacy. Although the Ramainz ceased to exist with Dee Dee’s death in early 2002, rumor has it that another live album and an unfinished studio album lie hidden in the vaults somewhere, so listeners may not have heard the last of the biggest and baddest of the Ramones’ cover bands. ~ Rev.
